Chavan is likely to get elected as an MLC

MUMBAI: As the Shiv Sena has decided not to field a candidate against Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is likely to get elected as an MLC unopposed in the by-election scheduled for May 4.

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray announced that his party would not contest the MLC bypoll and said the prevailing situation in the state was such that the people had lost interest in such elections. He also criticised Chavan for the government’s action against those protesting the Jaitapur nuclear power plant project.

The decision of not contesting the bypoll followed the CM’s appeal to the Sena leadership. Even if the Sena had decided to field a nominee, it would have been futile considering the clear majority of the Congress-NCP in the Assembly, which is the Electoral College for the polls, a senior Shiv Sena leader said.

Prithviraj Chavan, who holds office on November 11, 2010, after Ashok Chavan stepped down due to his alleged involvement in the Adarsh scam, is a Rajya Sabha member. He is required to become a member of either the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council within six months of swearing in.
