CBI Probe in YSR Chopper Crash

The CBI will probe the air crash in which Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy was killed with four others.

The interim chief minister K Rosaiah, sworn last week, requested for the CBI inquiry into the matter. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram acquiescenced in.

In the tragedy occurred last Thursday, YSR, 2 pilots, a security officer, a senior bureaucrat who were flying to Chittoor were killed when the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control. Following a 24-hour long extensive search by land, air and water, the chopper was found on a hilltop, where it had crashed, obviously because of bad weather. Nobody survived the crash.

The case will also be probed by a 2-member expert committee.

One of the main issues that will be examined is why the pilot chose to deviate eastwards from his flight plan towards the dense forests of the Nallamalla range in Kurnool district.

The black box for the helicopter was found on Saturday and is being examined by experts in Delhi.
