Cabinet Approves Bill Allowing Foreign Varsity Campuses in India

Government has approved a legislation that allows overseas education providers to establish campuses in India and imparts degrees, reported PTI.

Union Cabinet, presided by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, cleared the foreign Education Institution (Regulation of Entry and Operation) Bill 2010, paving the way for its tabling in the parliament, said report.

“This is a milestone which will enhance choices, increase competition and benchmark quality,” HRD minister Kapil Sibal was quoted as saying after the approval of the bill by the cabinet.

The legislation will regulated the entry and operation of foreign institutions which open shop here and offer degrees.

The bill has been delayed for more than two years due to opposition from many quarters, including Left parties, on some provisions.

Last year, it was referred to a Committee of Secretaries which brought modifications to certain provisions earlier existed.

Cabinet today approved it without any change, report said.
