Burns Carrying Obama’s Personal Letter for PM

US Under Secretary of State William Burns, who is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Friday, is carrying US President Barack Obama’s personal letter for Indian premier.

Speaking to media persons in Washinton, US Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke said that he spoke to Burns after his arrival in India.

Holbrooke informed that Burns is carrying a personal letter from Obama to Singh. He revealed that the US expects India’s cooperation with regard to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, Burns met Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon in New Delhi to discuss matters pertaining to bilateral relation between Indian and Pakistan.

During the meeting, Menon is believed to have communicated that Pakistan has not done enough in curbing terror directed against it and bringing to justice the perpetrators of Mumbai attacks.

Burns, the first high-ranking US official to visit India during UPA government’s second tenure, also met External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and Home Minister P Chidambaram.

He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Singh on Friday.
