Buddhadeb Warns School to Seriously Implement Ban on Corporal Punishment

West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has warned schools in the state to seriously implement the ban on corporal punishments, said media reports.

While tabling a statement on the suicide by La Martiniere School student Rouvanjit Rawla in the Assembly today, he said that many school still practiced corporal punishment, reports said.

He warned the schools that the state government would closely watch errant schools and take action from now onwards, said reports.

The chief minister said that La Martiniere School principal Sunirmal Chakrabarty had caned Rouvanjit, 14, on February 12, 2010 and the boy committed suicide a few days latter, according to a complaint lodged with the police by his father, Ajay Rawla, reports said.

He said that the principal reportedly summoned Rouvanjit for violating class discipline and wrote a note on his diary asking his guardians to come and meet him in the school, said Buddhadeb, said reports.

“Occurrence of such incidence leads us to believe that school authorities and some teachers do not treat this matter with importance,” Buddhadeb was quoted as saying.

The chief minister said that schools should make sure that no form of intimidation was meted out to students and that the state government had issued circulars to school inspectors and school authorities to create awareness, reports said.
