BSF Officer Arrested for Killing of 16-year-old-boy in Srinagar

In connection with the killing of a 16-year-old-boy in Srinagar, a senior officer of Border Security Force (BSF) has been arrested, reported NDTV.

BSF commanding officer RK Birdi was taken into custody in the morning following interrogation by a Special Investigating Team, said report.

Zahid Farooq was killed in a shoot out in Srinagar about a month ago when he, along with his friends, jeered at BSF convoy passing by. Later, Lakhvinder Kumar, a constable, was arrested for the killing.

However, the Union Home Ministry and the Chief Minister wanted a detailed probe into the case in which many, including Zahid’s family, alleged that the constable acted on the orders of Birdi.

Report said citing unnamed sources that police had enough evidence of Birdi’s involvement and that testimony from eyewitnesses and forensic reports allegedly indict him.

He is the highest-ranking security forces officer to be arrested for killing an innocent civilian in Kashmir – an indication that the government is trying hard to prove it means its promise of zero tolerance of human rights’ violations.
