Brinda Questions UPA Commitment to Women’s Reservation

CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat on Tuesday cast aspersions over the United Progressive Alliance government’s commitment to the enactment of the Women Reservation Bill.

“Though the Standing Committee consisting of MPs from LDF (party-led front in the state) has given necessary suggestions on the Bill, the legislation is in Parliament freezer for the past 13 years,” said Brings in Thiruvananthapuram, where she laid the foundation for a memorial dedicated to party veteran Susheela Gopalan.

She said that in contrast to the LDF government, which introduced bills in the assembly to provide 50 per cent reservation to women in local bodies last week, the Centre did not seem keen to introduce Women Reservation Bill in Parliament.

She criticised the UPA government for signing the Free Trade Agreement with ASIAN nations and claimed that the provisions of the deal would harm the agriculture-based economy of Kerala the most.
