BJP Hails Lifting of Stay on Guj Riots Cases

In what could be called a political reaction on lifting of stay on Gujarat riot cases, BJP has welcomed the Supreme Court decision to establish special fast-track courts, hoping that the apex court will take similar “pro-active” steps in cases pertaining to Bhagalpur riots, 1984 Sikh riots and Ramjanama Bhoomi land dispute.

“We welcome the order of the Supreme Court as it will bring justice to victims of Godhra train carnage and the riots after the carnage,” party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

Raising issues of cases related to Bhagalpur riots, 1984 Sikh riots and Ramjanama Bhoomi land dispute, he said that the BJP was confident that the Supreme Court would ensure “speedier justice” in other important riot cases of this nature.

“We hope that the Supreme court will also take such pro-active steps for speedier justice in case of Bhagalpur riots, 1984 Sikh carnage and we are sure that it will move for speedier disposal of Ramjanma Bhoomi land dispute which is pending in courts for 50 years,” he said.

Supreme Court yesterday lifted the stay on trial of Gujarat riots cases of 2002 and directed the setting up of fast-track courts for holding the trial on day-to-day basis.

The apex court ordered the setting up of designated courts for riot cases in Ahmedabad, Anand, Sabarkanta, Mehsana and Gulbarga districts.
