BJP Asks PC Not to Resign but to Shoulder Responsibility

Criticizing Union Home Minister for offering to step down, the BJP has said that his resignation will be a retreat, that is, a victory for the Maoists and a danger to the nation, said media reports.

BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that the party didn’t want him to quit, but to shoulder the responsibility of securing the nation, said reports.

He said that Chidambaram should make aspirational statements, instead, reports said.

The BJP also said that the home minister ‘is a victim of his own idiom’, said reports.

It was Chidambarm who first raised the question of accountability last week and said in the context of Naxalism in Bengal that the buck stopped with the chief minister.

However, following Naxal attack on CRPF contingent in Dantewada, BJP’s Arun Jaitley asked him where the buck stopped for that incidence.

Today, the home minister said that the buck stopped at his desk and also that he had offered to quit.

“The BJP is not demanding his resignation. The government needs to do its best and provide logistical support to the war against Naxals,” Rudy was quoted as saying, reiterating the party’s support to the Centre on all steps that it took to battle Naxalism.
