Bihar Govt Cann’t Challenge Lalu’s Acquittal in Disproportionate Assets Case: SC
Giving a big relief to RJD chief Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi in the disproportionate assets case, the Supreme Court has said that the exoneration of Lalu and his wife by the trial court cannot be challenged by Bihar government, said media reports.
The apex court made the observation while hearing a plea filed by Lalu and his wife challenging the ruling of the Patna High Court which admitted the appeal of Bihar government against their acquittal in a disproportionate assets case, reports said.
“I am very happy today,” the RJD chief was quoted as saying in response to the judgement. “We welcome SC’s verdict. I believe in the judiciary.”
Both Lalu and his wife were booked by the CBI for acquiring property worth Rs 46 lakh above their legal sources of income in the fodder scam case, reports said.
Lalu was sent to the Bihar military police guest house on judicial remand in July 1997 and again in October 1998. He spent a day in the Beur jail in the disproportionate assets case in November 2000.
Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, however, were acquitted of all charges by Special CBI Judge Muni Lal Paswan in Dec 2006.
The Bihar government challenged their acquittal in 2007.
