Beleaguered BJP Looks at Sangh for Direction

With RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat scheduled to address his first press conference in New Delhi on Friday, all eyes and ears in the crisis-stricken BJP are on tuned to him.

The party is expecting a roadmap from Bhagwat as indicated long meetings of Rajnath Singh and Murli Manohar Joshi with Bhagwat, separately, at RSS headquarters.

Needless to mention, just days ago, BJP’s chintan baithak in Shimla, that is, before Jaswant Singh’s expulsion and Arun Shourie’s diatribe, Bhagwat had spoken of the need for discipline in the BJP and a “younger leadership.” When and how (to work on this) is the BJP’s job, he had said.

What Bhagwat says assumes significance given that Shourie – in an interview to Shekhar Gupta on NDTV’s Walk the Talk early this week – openly called for “the RSS to take over the party” after easing out the top brass.

Shourie has yet not bee issued any “clarification notice”, in a sharp contract to Jaswant Singh, who was expelled even without a hearing.

“A clarification notice would be issued to him after BJP Legislative Party leader in Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje relinquishes her position,” said a senior BJP leader, in what suggested a deep-rooted divide in the party.

Rajnath has been keen to secure Raje’s resignation while going slow on action against Shourie. The Rajnath camp has maintained that the local RSS unit in Rajasthan is against Raje.
