Ban Jaswant Singh’s Book Lifted by Gujarat HC

The Gujarat High Court has lifted the ban imposed by Modi government on Jaswant Singh’s book on founder of Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

Hearing a PIL, the court set aside Gujarat government’s order banning the book, observing that the ban curtails fundamental rights.

On the ground that the contents of the book shatters Sardar Patel’s image, Modi government had banned the expelled BJP leader’s book ‘Jinnah-India, Partition, Independence’.

A state government’s statement about ban had said: “Jaswant Singh’s book questions role of Sardar Patel during the partition of India as well as his patriotic spirit. This is an attempt to tarnish the image of Patel who is considered the architect of modern united India.”

“It is a bid to defame Patel by distorting historical facts,” it charged.

Pleased with the ruling, author of the book Jaswant Singh said that he was “thrilled” by the high court judgement and added that it was a positive reflection on the judiciary. But he said, “One should not have to go to the court for this.”

“I have not abused anybody, so why (ban the book)?” he added.
