Badal Meets PM, Requests Immediate Legal Aid to 17 Indian on Death Row in UAE

Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal on Wednesday called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and requested him to immediately grant legal aid to 17 Indians facing death sentence in UAE, reported PTI.

Badal met Singh at the Prime Minister’s residence at 7, Race Course Road this morning, said a statement in New Delhi.

Allaying his concerns, prime minister told Badal that he had already issued directives to the Ministries of External Affairs and Overseas Indian Affairs to give all possible aid to the Indian convicts for a positive outcome, report said.

Earlier, Badal had written to Singh asking him to personally intervene immediately for providing required assistance and legal aid to the hapless persons so that there was no miscarriage of justice, said report.

Besides, the chief minister expressed gratitude to Overseas Indian Minister Vayalar Ravi for taking necessary actions to help the Indian convicts, said report.

Secretary of Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry Didar Singh met the Chief Minister at Kapurthala House to brief him on the latest status regarding the 17 Indians sentenced to death on March 29 by a Sharjah shariah court for killing a Pakistani last year.

An appeal is to be filed within 15 days of the judgement which is being filed tomorrow, the statement said.
