Assam on Max Alert Ahead of I-Day

Assam has been put on a maximum alert ahead of Independence Day following intelligence reports stating that five women militants had managed to enter Guwahati to carry out terror strikes, say reports citing officials on Thursday.

Te women are believed to be members of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).

“We have information that these women militants are experts in handling explosives and have probably entered Guwahati with a mission to strike ahead of Aug 15,” Guwahati police spokesperson Debojit Deuri was quoted as saying by IANS.

Five separatist guerrilla groups in the northeast have called for a 17-hour general strike to boycott Independence Day celebrations.

The groups include ULFA, NDFB, the Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), the Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF), and the Tripura People’s Democratic Front (TPDF).

As part of the boycott call, the militant groups have called for a general strike from 0100 hours to 1830 hours on August 15.
