Anjali Waghmare to Defend Kasab in 26/11 Case

Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist caught alive during the macabre 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai will be defended by Anjali Waghmare, a lawyer with the Maharashtra Service Legal Authority.

Waghmare (40) was appointed by the special court on Monday which is likely to begin proceedings in the 26/11 case at the high security Arthur Road prison on April 6.

“My name was short listed along with 17 other lawyers and I was asked to appear today in the court if I want to defend Kasab,” Waghmare was quoted as saying in media reports.

“I am confident and not scared to defend Kasab as I know my duties as an Indian and towards my fellow citizens,” said Waghmare while speaking to correspondents but refused to divulge reasons behind defending Kasab.

Waghmare is a Law graduate from prestigious Symbiosis College, Pune, and has been practicing since 1996.

She has asked the court to provide her adequate security.

Kasab had earlier sought consular access from Pakistan, but requested the court to provide a lawyer at the expense of the state, after his requests for consular access failed to elicit a response from Islamabad.

Following the request, the court prepared a panel of 17 lawyers of which Waghmare was approved by the judge to appear for Kasab, a resident of Faridkot in Pakistan.
