Alagiri Still to Respond to Speaker’s Invitation for Meeting over Speaking in Tamil

Union Minister  for Chemicals and Fertilizers MK Alagiri has yet not responded to invitation by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on his plea for a permission to speak in Tamil in Parliament, reported PTI.

“I have been requesting him to come and meet me so that all his problems are resolved. I am here to resolve all problems,” Kumar was quoted as saying while speaking to reporters in response to the query about Alagiri’s response to her invitation.

Kumar had asked Alagiri more than two months ago to meet her to discuss his request to allow him to speak in Tamil as he was not fluent in Hindi or English.

The Speaker said that interpretation facilities for 14 languages are available in Parliament and to avail of this, members have to give advance notice and get the Speaker’s permission.

Due to the language barrier, Alagiri has reportedly authorised his junior Srikant Jena to answer questions in Parliament.
