26 Drown, 50 Others Missing after Boat Capsize in Bihar

As many as 26 people, most of them minors and women, feared drowned and fifty others were missing after two boats carrying Durga Puja revellers turned over in the swollen Bagmati and Kamala Balan rivers in Bihar, said police.

Indranand Mishra, Superintendent of Police, said that 18 people drowned and 45-50 others were missing following a country boat, overcrowded with nearly 100 people on it, sank the Bagmati river near Fultora ghat in Khagaria last evening. The passengers were on their returning journey from a Vijaya Dashami fair.

He said that 18 bodies, mostly of minors and women, have been recovered by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel and the rescure operation was on.

In another mishap, eight people died when a boat carrying 17 people sank in Kamala Balan river in Darbhanga district last evening during immersion of an idol of Goddess Durga.
