Less Indian, International Students Apply for Study Visa to Australia

Latest figures from the Australian government show that the number of Indian students aspiring to study in Australia has plummeted to nearly 50%.

Figures from the immigration department show that the number of Indians applying for study visas to Australia has come down by 46%.

This decline has been registered in a year which follows attacks on India students in Melbourne and Sydney and made headlines in India. Also, they had bearing on diplomatic relations between Canberra and New Delhi.

After Nitin Garg, a graduate student, was killed on Saturday in Melbourne, Indian government issued an advisory to students living in or willing to study in Australia.

The above figures are from last July to October and it is feared that the recent murder of Nitin Garg will raise even more concerns about student safety, and lead many more to look at universities and colleges in other countries.

International students are worth $13bn (£8.1bn) to the Australian economy each year.  After coal and iron ore, education is the country’s third biggest export.

It should be noted that the reduction has been seen in overall international visa applications, not just Indians, which are down by a quarter.

Education experts say that it may be the result of the strength of the Australian dollar and the tightening of the visa applications process. But they also accept that Australia has suffered reputational damage, especially in India.
