19 Face Music for JNU Ragging Incident

The famed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi rusticated nine students for two years and expelled another 10 from its hostels for a year after they were found guilty of subjecting their juniors to ragging or abetting the nuisance.

In first ever ragging incident to be reported by the university, an anti-ragging squad caught four MCA students red-handed in a room at the Sabarmati Hostel on the JNU campus.

Desperate to cobble together its credibility as a ragging-free institution, a proctoral committee put some 40 MCA students to several rounds of questioning, before submitting its report on Wednesday.

At least three of the 19 indicted for the incident are girls.

The rusticated students are barred from entering the scenic JNU campus for a period of two years.

Long regarded a Left bastion emulating heroes like Lenin, Marx, Mao and Che Guevara, the average JNU student has witnessed huge changes over the last decade or so, the ragging incident is a case in point.
