‘Explosion’ near Rahul Venue, Chaos in Madurai
Chaos prevailed on Madurai streets on Tuesday morning after an ‘explosion’ took place in the vicinity of the Kamraj Grounds, where AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to address a Youth Congress rally later in the day.
Gandhi is in the city as part of a three day visit to Tamil Nadu.
The explosion, which took place at around 1130 hours, was later described by Madurao police as an accidental gun-shot from a policeman’s rifle. A 60-uear-old woman was killed in the incident.
“It was a bullet from one of the policemen guarding the Madurai Corporation grounds. However, the accidental gun shot fatally hit a 60-year-old woman who succumbed to injuries,” police commissioner Nandagopalan was quoted as saying.
He affirmed that “necessary action” would soon be initiated against those involved in the incident.
There was no news on if or not the Congress leader had changed or cancelled his proposed meeting.
