Viktor Yanukovych Sworn in as Ukraine President

Following a thin victory last month, Viktor Yanukovych has been sworn in as the president of Ukraine. In his inauguration speech Thursday, the Party of Regions’ leader voiced favour for a foreign policy involving ties with Russia, the European Union and the US.

He is the fourth president of the country, since the former Soviet republic gained independence in 1991.

Having twice served as prime minister, Yanukovich last month registered a slim victory over prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko to avenge the ignominy that kept him out of office after the 2004 presidential vote was claimed to have been rigged in his favour.

While Tymoshenko maintained that the 59 year old Yanukovych was not legitimately elected, she dropped a court case on the claims Saturday last.

Correspondents in the Ukranian capital – Kiev – say Tymoshenko’s refusal to step down as the prime minister may prolong the wrangling that has paralysed the country’s government for several years.
