Victorian Police Review Delays University Report on Racism

A university research paper which reveals new findings on racist assaults on Indian students in Melbourne has been reportedly delayed for more than two months as Victoria Police examined its findings, reported PTI.

For review of the findings, the police was provided 60 days time, delaying its release from November to February 16, said report.

The project was started in June last year, which the university described at the time as a fast-track attempt to collect survey and interview proof from students and community stakeholders, said report.

According to an Australian newspaper report, the delays were seen as disappointing for some researchers targeting an early December release, said report.

Victoria University (VU), however, said that its decision to wait for police approval was important because police participation had resulted in a more comprehensive and detailed report, said report.

Linda Rosenman, VU acting vice-chancellor, said that the university would have liked to release the report earlier but felt that police participation was important, said report.

“There was never any pressure on Victoria University to amend or alter our findings,” she was quoted as saying.

Senior Sergeant Simon Foster of the Victoria Police research co-ordinating committee said that the report was 210 pages long and had to be reviewed by a number of different areas of the organisation.

“When Victoria Police agrees to provide information, data or access to interview members for external research projects, they are given a 60-day period to review the draft report and provide feedback,” he was quoted as saying.
