Turkey Calls Back Envoy as Sweden Recognises 1915 Killings as Genocide

After Sweden parliament recognizes the killing of Armenians by Ottoman forces during 1915 as genocide, Turkey has called back its ambassador from that country, reported Aljazeera.

The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan ‘strongly’ flayed Thursday’s vote, occurred only a week after Ankara recalled its envoy to the US over a similar resolution, report said.

“Our people and our government reject this decision based upon major errors and without foundation,” Erdogan was quoted as saying.

He also informed that that he was cancelling a Turkey-Sweden summit scheduled next week, said report.

Though Turkey accepts Ottoman Turks killed many Christian Armenians, it dismisses that up to 1.5 million die and that it amounted to genocide – a word used by many Western historians.

The Swedish parliament passed the resolution by a very narrow margin, with 131 parliamentarians voting in favour and 130 against, and 88 members staying away.
