Terror, Extremism Eating at Pakistan: Gilani

“Terrorism and extremism are eating at Pakistan like termites,” said Pakistan prime minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, on Wednesday while lauded the role of the country’s military in the “success” against the Taliban, say media reports.

Gilani was speaking in Faisalabad, his address was televised live on several local television channels.

“Our brave military fought the terrorists, they were martyred also, and with the blessings of Allah we achieved success,” he said.

The pronouncements came as intelligence officials continued to question Maulvi Omar, a senior spokesman for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), he was captured from the Mohmand district bordering Afghanistan on Monday.

Meanwhile, mystery continued to shroud the death of TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud with Mohmand Taliban chief Omar Khalid denying reports of Mehsud’s death in a drone strike.

“I have spoken to Baitullah Mehsud two days ago and he told me that his message will be issued to the media soon,” he was quoted as saying, over the telephone, by French news agency AFP.

His statements were in stark contrast to claims made by intelligence agencies which said that the captured Taliban spokesman had confirmed Baitullah Mehsud’s death in a drone strike.
