Taiwan Issues Land, Sea Warnings for Mediocre Typhoon

Taiwanese met officials issued land and sea warnings on Thursday for a mid-strength typhoon, the biggest this year, and said that heavy rain and wind gusts up to 180 kph were expected overnight before the storm moves into China.

Several schools and offices, including Taipei’s stock and forex markets, will be closed on Friday, said officials, as heavy rains continued to drench the capital.

Typhoon Morakot is expected to reach northern Taiwan by early Friday with winds up to 140 kph, said the Central Weather Bureau website.
