Rocket Strikes in Israel, Thai Worker Killed

A Thai worker in Israel died in a rocket attack from the Hamas-controlled Palestinian territory of Gaza, said media reports citing the Israeli military.

The strike occurred soon after a European Union’s high ranking foreign policy official reached there on a rare official visit.

According to Israeli military, the rocket struck an Israeli cooperative firm called Native Haasara, near the Gaza border, killing the Thai worker, who is the first fatality of rocket strike from Gaza since the end of a three-week Israeli military offensive into Gaza in January 2009.

Earlier, Baroness Catherine Ashton, the European Union’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, reached the region on an official visit, reports said.

Ashton is the most senior European authority to visit Gaza since the Islamic militant group Hamas took power there in 2007.

During the visit, she is schedule to visit a UN-run schools and to meet UN officials to talk about humanitarian efforts for the Palestinian population. Later on Friday, she will be attending a meeting of quartet representatives in Russia.
