Palestinian Protesters Clash with Israeli Police on ‘Day of Rage’

In two areas of occupied east Jerusalem, dozens of Palestinian protestors clashed on Tuesday with Israeli police on ‘day of rage’ as Hamas declared protest againstthe reopening of a synagogue in the Old City, said media reports.

Protesters hurled rocks at Israeli police, burned tires and trash bins in many areas of east Jerusalem, said report, adding that police responded with tear gas shells and fired rubber bullets.

Seven people were arrested and there were no immediate reports of any injury to either Israelis or Palestinians, reports said.

About 3,000 police officers were deployed in east Jerusalem and nearby villages after Hamas called for action in response to the reopening of the Hurva synagogue.

Khaled Meshaal, Hamas’ political chief who is exiled in Syria, warned against the reopening on Monday.
