Nine Feared Dead in NYC Mid-Air Collision

Nine people are feared dead after a mid-air collision between a tour helicopter and a light aircraft near New York City, officials have confirmed the recovery of two bodies from the Hudson River, into which both the aircraft crashed.

Six people – one pilot and five Italian tourists – were on the helicopter. Three people including a child were on the plane, say media reports citing the local administration.

The helicopter, operated by Liberty Helicopters, flew tourists around sites such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

The light plane took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and was heading to Ocean City in the same state, said BBC citing an aviation official.

Though a full fledged rescue operation is underway, experts say, chances of survival, for those aboard the two aircraft, were rather slim.
