LeT Could Trigger Indo-Pak War: US Official

A top American Army official has expressed fears that extremist groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) could possibly trigger a war between India and Pakistan, reported ANI.

In his address to the Senate Committee on Armed Services, Lt Gen Francis Kearney, deputy commander, US Special Operations Command, said that despite its steps regarding preventing any terrorist activity on its soil, the US is worried about militants’ aim of spreading bloodshed across the globe, said report.

“One of our key pillars (is) that something spurs up as a result of a Lashkar-e-Toiba, you know, as they continue to try and trigger some kind of impact between Pakistan and India in the region,” Lt Gen Kearney was quoted as saying by ‘The Dawn’.

“And so it’s keeping an eye on the ball forward as we protect the ball here at home,” he was quoted as saying.

Kearney said that main concern was about the terror groups attempting to wreak havoc using material present inside the country, said report.

“Militants also have the capability to get people into the United States and use tools here that exist that you don’t need to smuggle in worries me, industrial accidents,” he was quoted as saying.

Besides, he said that he was worried ‘very much’ about the trans-regional actors, such as LeT, who can trigger tensions in their region, report said.

Bill Nelson, chairman of the committee, noted that despite America’s nine-year war against al-Qaida, Taliban and other terrorist groups in Afghanistan, they are yet capable of striking anywhere in the world and are now spreading their tentacles to newer regions such as Africa and Arabian Peninsula, said report.

“They still have the capability of launching attacks, and they can launch them from many different places in the world,” Nelson was quoted as saying.

He also pointed out that the threat of violent extremism is complex and has the ability to destabilise countries and create economic crisis, report said.
