Lanka Troops Unearth Tiger Mortar Factory

Sri Lankan Army search operations in Tamil Tiger rebels’ former administrative headquarters of Kilinochchi in the north have detected a mortar manufacturing plant, said the military on Wednesday.

Officials from the Ministry of Defense say three huts used to manufacture 81 mm mortar bombs for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were discovered during search operations.

Kilinochchi came into Army control in January this year after being under the Tiger rebels since 1998. It fall was one of the worst setbacks suffered by the rebels since the government launched what it calls a decisive war against Tamil insurgency.

Continuing Army operations in the Mullaittivu district’s Puthukudiyiruppu area inflicting heavy damages to the rebels, say the officials.

Meanwhile, Tiger rebels are being accused of gunning down five farmers in the island’s eastern province of Trincomalee on Tuesday night.

Police say search operations for the culprits are continuing

Some 25 years into a bloody war with itself, bullets and accusations fly thick in the island that has pushed the rebel Tigers into an area of less than 20 sq km where guns continue to blaze remorseless of over 70,000 deaths caused by the conflict.
