HC Asks Nanawati Commission why it Didn’t Summon Modi

Issuing a notice, the Gujarat High Court has asked the Nanawati Commission for an explanation for deciding not to summon chief minister Narendra Modi in the course of its investigation into the 2002 riots, said media reports.

Modi was asked to present himself in current month before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Supreme Court, reports said.

Led by KR Raghavan, the SIT is looking into 9 cases of communal riots and Modi was asked to appear in connection with the Ehsan Jafri case.

The former Congress MP was burnt alive in Ahmedabad’s Gulbarg society. A case filed by his wife charges Modi and many of his ministers and bureaucrats of conspiring to ensure that calls for help by Jafri and others were ignored.

Modi has not yet indicated whether he will appear before Raghavan’s panel.
