Noordin Top Killed in Java Raids, Indonesian Police

Noordin Mohammad Top, prime suspect in July’s suicide bomb attacks on luxury hotels in Jakarta and several other similar crimes, was killed during a police raid in Central Java, said the police on Thursday.

Top, a former accountant and maths teacher and one of Asia’s most wanted men, was earlier believed to have been killed in a raid in Central Java last month but forensic tests later revealed that the body was that of one of his associates.

The Malaysian-born Top was suspected of masterminding the bomb attacks on the JW Marriott in Jakarta in 2003, on the Australian Embassy in Jakarta in 2004 and in Bali in 2005.

Though he was initially known as a key figure in the militant Jemaah Islamiah, experts say that he later moved on to establish a far more violent splinter group.
