Court Restores Shahbaz Sharif as Punjab CM

Pakistan Supreme Court on Tuesday issued orders to restore Nawaz Sharif’s brother, Shahbaz, as chief minister of the country’s Punjab province. The directives are part of a review of a court ruling last month that banned PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz from holding elected office due to convictions they faced in the past.

The suspension of the ban restores Shahbaz Sharif as the Chief Minister of
Punjab province which was the venue of a venomous terror attack on a police training school on Monday.

Welcoming the court directives Shahbaz Sharif termed the court order a victory for the country’s feeble democracy.

“We are thankful to God on the judiciary decision, God has proved the truthfulness of our stand,” he said.

On Monday, President Asif Ali Zardari lifted federal rule in Punjab, the mainstay of electoral support enjoyed by the Sharifs.

Earlier this month, Pakistan Chief Justice Iftikhar Choudhry was reluctantly reinstated into office by Zardari following nationwide protests launched by PML-N activists and lawyers.

The Sharifs had rejected the ban as it was passed by judges installed by former military ruler Pervez Musharaf when he clamped emergency before resigning as chief of the Pakistan army.
