China Opposes Obama Aides’ Dalai Meet

China on Tuesday criticized a meeting between aides of President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama and said that Beijing was opposed to any such engagements with the Tibetan spiritual leader.

China blames the Dalai for seeking independence for the Tibetan people, the Dalai however, saus he is only crusading for genuine autonomy for his people.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Beijing firmly opposed any foreign officials meeting with the Dalai Lama.

Valerie Jarrett, a top adviser to President Obama, met the Tibetan spiritual leader in Dharmsala on Sunday and Monday.

The US embassy in New Delhi later said Jarrett, who was accompanied by a top state department official, was in the country on a private visit.

The Dalai is scheduled to travel to the United States in early October.

“We oppose Dalai’s engagement in separatist activities in any country under whatever capacity and in whatever name and we oppose other countries’ officials meeting with Dalai in any form,” Jiang was quoted as saying at regular press briefing.
