Blast near Voting Centre in Baghdad, Five Killed

At least five people were killed as an explosion hit the Iraqi capital on Thursday as soldiers, prisoners and hospital patients cast ballots in early voting in the country’s general election, reported Voice of America.

Report said quoting officials that the explosion, believed to be caused either by a rocket or a bomb, occurred near a pollution station that was not being used.

The attack took place despite heavy security at Baghdad polling booths, where those could not cast their ballot on Sunday came to vote in the early voting session, report said.

Report said that officials have warned that insurgents may increase attacks in an attempt to disrupt the vote, which is only the second parliamentary election since former dictator Saddam Hussein was overthrown in 2003.

On Wednesday, three suicide bombers blew themselves up in Baquba, northeast of the capital, killing at least 31 people in the deadliest attack in weeks.
