Australia Asks Indian Media to ‘Wait for Full Facts’ on Attacks
About attacks on Indians in its cities, Australia has asked Indian media to ‘wait for the full facts’ while reporting on alleged racism and also expressed fear that the appeal will fall on ‘deaf ears’.
AAP quoted acing Foreign Minister Simon Crean as saying that it was too early to conclude that the recent attacks on Indians were racially motivated.
“We are dealing with sensitive issues here, but the fact is… there is no evidence that they’re racially based (attacks),” he said.
In fast few days, two attacks on Indians resulted in their death and India later issue an advisory. India expressed fears that the attacks could strain bilateral ties.
Nonetheless, Australia, ruling out racist nature of the attacks, has cautioned India against overreacting.
“It is far better to… wait for the full facts, we would urge the Indian newspapers to do that,” Crean said.
“But I think that will fall on deaf ears in a number of cases because we are used to that,” he said in an obvious reference to the continued reports in Indian media following several attacks on Indian nationals.
On Sunday, Crean had expressed satisfaction over the Indian government’s ‘constructive and responsible advice’ to the media to exercise restraint while reporting attacks on the community members.
