$6m in US Aid for Demining in Lanka

The US on Wednesday announced US$2 million financial assistance for the rehabilitation of ethnic Tamils displaced in the “decisive war between Sri Lankan government troops and Tiger rebels and a further $6 million to fund de-mining activities in the island’s north, say media reports.

Announcing the decision, the US embassy in Colombo said that its contribution of $6 million towards de-mining expenses was made available to help the early return of internally displaced people to their homes in the country’s northern parts.

The financial package is in addition to a $2 million aid, being provided by US Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), as short-term assistance to benefit the nearly 200,000 IDPs in Sri Lanka.
