26 Militants Killed in Pakistan’s Tribal Region

26 militants were killed in clashes with security personnel in Pakistan’s tribal region Monday even as a leader of a pro-government armed group was killed by a bomb, said reports attributing the info to unnamed officials.

Security personnel gunned down eight militants and captured four others after a military convoy came under militant fire in the Meerobak area of Orakzai Agency. Two soldiers were also wounded in the gun battle.

In another incident, security personnel killed five militants near Kalaya in Orakzai after radicals fired rockets at a security check post, say reports citing intelligence officials.

Meanwhile, government troops backed by helicopter gunships are reported to have killed 13 militants holed up in three hideouts in northern Orakzai.

A remote controlled explosion injured five policemen and a civilian in Hangu district of NWFP, said reports citing the local police.

Separately, Malik Taj, leader of a pro-government armed group, was killed in a bomb attack as he was returning from a group meeting.

The remote controlled explosion fatally wounded Taj in the Laghari village of Bajaur Agency.
