Bhopal’s Jadoo Nominated to Rajya Sabha

Bhopal  —  Noted Bollywood scriptwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar was on Friday nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Pratibha Patil along with four others including former union minister Mani Shankar Aiyar.

Born at Gwalior in 1945, Akhtar has close ties with the state capital, where he spent a considerable part of his boyhood days.

Affectionately referred to as Jadoo by old timers, he studied at the local Cambridge School before graduating from the Saifia College in 1964.

His parents – noted poets Safia and Jaan Nisar Akhtar – taught at the Hamidia College.

A keen debater, Jadoo is believed to have penned the blockbuster Sholay script, along with his now estranged partner – Salim Khan, in what is these days referred to as the Chatori Gali, in the Ibrahimpura area of the old city.

With his pen casting a spell over movie buffs for over four decades now, Akhtar has won 14 Filmfare awards, five national awards and was conferred the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007.

Married to actor-activist Shabana Azmi, Akhtar’s progeny – Farhan and Zoya Akhtar – are Bollywood celebrities in their own right.

Ram Dayal Munda, Bhalchandra Mungekar and B. Jayashree are the other three nominated to the Rajya Sanbha with Akhtar and Aiyar.
