UPA Partners Critical of Centre’s Move on Telangana

UPA partners have come out strongly against Centre’s move and method adopted on Telangana.

During a Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, the Cabinet also discussed how the Centre and the Congress should wriggle out of a tricky political situation in Andhra.

However, the hour long meeting didn’t result in a clear solution, rather more questions arose for UPA managers.

Media reports said that UPA allies like Sharad Pawar, Mamata Banerjee and Dayanidhi Maran strongly objected to the Centre’s move, for it didn’t even consult them before Home Minister P Chidambaram announced the initiation of the process of creation of a separate Telangana.

Railways Minsiter Mamata Banerjee was the most vocal about her criticism of Centre’s decision, saying that a Cabinet meeting should have been held before the announcement.

The allies are now asking for setting up of a separate committee to look into the question of creating more states.

The Home Minister, who made a dramatic late night announcement last week on splitting up of Andhra, may now have to make another clarification on the government’s stand.

That statement could well be made Wednesday itself in Parliament.
