November 25, 2009 Visionmp.com news service

Security forces gunned down an ULFA militant, suspected of involvement in the Nalbari twin blasts which claimed seven lives, after an hour long gun battle in the Chirang district of Assam on Wednesday, the police said.

The encounter started as the militant opened fire in a bid to escape the security forces, who were combing the area in search of the ultra.

The militant, identified as ‘second lieutenant’ Pranoy Roy of ULFA’s 709 battalion, is suspected to be the key person behind the November 22 attack, police said.

The entire area has been cordoned off and massive search is on there, they added.

The state is on high alert with security beefed up following the blasts and intelligence reports that the banned outfit was planning to carry out more strikes in the days leading up to November 27, which the outfit observes as ‘Martyrs’ Day’.
