Two Central Universities in J&K, but No IIM

Fulfilling higher education requirement of Jammu and Kashmir regions, the central government has decided to open two central universities in the two regions of the state but has dropped the idea for establishing an IIM there.

Earlier, government had decided to open up a central university in the state, it got trapped in controversy with both regions demanding the institute to be located in their areas.

Even chief minister Omar Abdullah took up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, suggesting that the university could have two campuses.

“As a special case and keeping in view the regional aspirations, the government decided to set up two central universities in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. They will offer distinct courses in emerging areas of nano-technology, bio-technology and IT,” HRD Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters today.
