Lalu Clarifies ‘Roller’ Remarks

Targeted by widespread criticism for lashing out at both Varun Gandhi and the Union Home Minister with one stone, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) boss Lalu Prasad on Tuesday launched damage control measures to quell the controversy and avoid any action from the Election Commission.

Maintaining that he was quoted out of context, Lalu said: “What I meant was crushing him under the roller of law had I been the home minister.”

Though, the BJP was immediate in its response to Lalu’s pronouncements, the Congress has maintained a studied silence over the targeting of the home minister by its once trusted ally.

His clarification came a day after he stated in Kishanganj in Bihar that had he been the country’s home minister he would have crushed Varun Gandhi under a roller.

Addressing an election meeting in support of RJD candidate Ghuran Ram in Jharkhand, Lalu on Tuesday said that the BJP was out to destroy the country’s social fabric.

Reiterating an earlier statement Lalu told the gathering, “Advani can never become the Prime Minister. Mulayam Singh, Ram Vilas Paswan and I have joined hands to stop the communal forces from coming to power.”
