Shutdown against Inflation Affects Life, Transport Services across States

A day long nationwide shutdown called by thirteen opposition parties led by the Left Front in protest against price rise has hit life and affected air and rail services specially in Left-ruled states West Bengal, Kerala and parts of Uttar Pradesh, said media reports.

Nevertheless, the main opposition BJP led NDA decided not to participate in the shutdown and is instead focusing on embarrassing the central government by moving a cut motion in the Lok Sabha later in the evening, reports said.

Due to shutdown, air, train and road transport services were affected in Kolkata and Lucknow while the streets of Thiruvananthapuram bore a deserted look after the closure of all schools and businesses, said reports.

Protesters in Lucknow marched menacingly towards the state assembly and targeted state-run buses and some trains, while in Kolkata, many flights and trains were cancelled, reports said.

In other parts of the country, life was normal in by and large, said reports.

Adopting lenient stand towards their employees, the state government in West Bengal and Kerala decided to treat any leave by the employees as casual leave, reports said.

“We have made all arrangements and any attempt to stop anything forcibly will be severely dealt with,” West Bengal Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti was quoted a saying.

In Allahabad, SP activists shouted slogans against the Congress-led UPA and the BSP state government, said reports.

Activists of the SP activists stopped the Ganga Gomti train near the Prayag railway station in Allahabad, about 200 km from Lucknow, and also tried to damage a rail track and destroy public property near a prominent college.

“Around 50 SP activists have been arrested in the morning. Additional security has been deployed taking into account the series of protests expected later in the day,” Superintendent of Police SS Bhaghel in Allahabad was quoted as saying.
