Shimoga, Hassan Returning to Normalcy, Taslima Denies Writing Article

Shimoga and Hassan towns in Karnataka were returning to normalcy on Tuesday, a day after violent protests erupted over the publication of an article, purportedly written by controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin, in a local daily.
Speaking in the Karnataka Assembly Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa said normalcy was returning to the two towns and added that no untoward incident was reported since Monday night.
Authorities have extended the curfew in Shimoga town till Wednesday.
“Those who take the law into their hands will be strictly dealt with,” he said.
Yeddyurappa said cases have been registered against the daily and 103 people taken into custody in the two cities, where 33 persons and 25 policemen were wounded in the violence and 74 shops and 50 vehicles were damaged.
As the House met, Congress leader Siddaramaiah and JD-S leader HD Revanna asked the government to give compensation to those hit by the violence.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued to PTI news agency, Taslima Nasrin has denied writing the article published in ‘Kannada Prabha’ newspaper and termed the controversy a deliberate attempt to malign her.
The newspaper had claimed the article was reproduced by a book written by Nasrin and published it in its Sunday supplement on Feb. 28.
