Seven policemen in Rajasthan, who allegedly sold off a corpse of a 19-year-old boy to a medical college without a notification, has been chargesheeted while six others, five of them sub-inspectors, removed from active duty, said media reports.

In addition, the Rajasthan Human Rights Commission also ordered a probe into the alleged sale of dead bodies in the Sringangnagar district, reports said.

The District Collector and the Superintendent of Police were instructed to submit a report on the case by April 5, said reports.

The sale of the corpse came to light after father of victim Rajkumar Soni filed an RTI while searching his son. The query not only produced information about his son but also exposed huge irregularities in the way police deal with unidentified bodies.

“This is a serious issue, we have ordered a probe into it and we expect the reports in three days. Enquiry has been set against the accused police officers, if found guilty strict action will be taken against them,” state Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal was quoted as saying.

However, opposition alleged that the state government was providing protection to the police personnel and medical colleges involved, said reports.

“I accuse the government of shielding the medical college authorities. The senior police officials too are trying to brush it under the carpet,” a BJP MLA Om Birla was quoted as saying.
