Varun Gandhi Submits Refrain Undertaking
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha candidate for Pilibhit, Varun Gandhi on Tuesday submitted an undertaking, promising to refrain from making provocative speeches during the elections, to the Supreme Court, say media reports citing district officials in Etah.
Varun Gandhi submitted the undertaking to Etah District Magistrate Gaurav Dayal, who will in-turn dispatch the document to the Supreme Court, they said.
Varun Gandhi, who is currently lodged at the Etah jail under provisions of the National Security Act, invoked against him by the Uttar Pradesh state government, submitted the document a day after the apex court suggested that such a move could secure his release.
The court had termed the invoking of the stringent NSA against the 29-year-old as “drastic” and is now scheduled to hear the case on Thursday, a day before filing of nomination papers commences for the Pilibhit parliamentary segment in Uttar Pradesh.
