Cairo. Ex-Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak is now in very critical condition, as some reports declared him clinically dead, while another suggests him in comma.
The 84-year-old former president has transferred to Maadi Hospital late last night after he was defibrillated in the prison hospital, state-run new agency MENA reported.
The agency quoted hospital sources as saying that Mubarak was “clinically dead”. According to earlier reports, Mubarak was declared “clinically dead” upon arrival, but an official later said he was in coma on life support and not clinically dead.
Mubarak has been transferred from Torah prison outside Cairo to Maadi Armed Forces Hospital, after he suffered a heart attack, his lawyer said.
His supporters gathered outside the hospital this morning. Some held Mubarak’s photos while others prayed for him.
But Nile TV said that attempts are continuing to revive him and he has been put on ventilator. The television station began broadcasting archival footage of Mubarak during his presidency, which ended with a popular uprising last year.
Al Jazeera quoted a lawyer for Mubarak’s family as saying that the ousted president was actually unconscious and on a respirator after he was rushed to Maadi Hospital.
Mubarak’s wife Suzanne has reportedly arrived at the hospital. “We do understand from family sources that Hosni Mubarak is improving,” Al Jazeera said. “We believe he is still in a coma.”
Mubarak, 84, was hospitalized with his first heart failure June 2 after he received his sentence for ordering the killing of protesters in the spring of 2011.
