HANDWARA: In Handwara area of Jammu and Kashmir protests have erupted after a man was killed in an Army ambush operation in Chogal village on Friday night.

Police say the Army opened fire when it noticed suspicious movement. Twenty-one-year-old Manzoor Ahmed Magray was an employee of the Border Roads Organisation. A probe has been ordered into the incident by the Army.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemning the killing said the incident could have been avoided if a suggestion made by him at a meeting of the unified command had been implemented. However, he did not elaborate as to what the suggestion was.

Omar tweeted, “How can one not condemn the death of 21 year old Manzoor at the hands of the Army late last night. Another needless death in a bloody Kashmir.”
“Have been trying to understand the circumstances, lots of questions, but not enough answers at the moment,” he added.

Defence spokesperson Lt Col JS Brar said, “We, though following rules of engagement laid down for such incidents, deeply regret the loss of life. More so because the Army has declared this year as the year of the Kashmiri awam. We also send our deep and heart-felt condolence to the grieved family.”
