Kashmir Was Nearly Solved in 2001, Claims Musharraf

Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that the Kashmir issue had almost reached its resolution during his rein and refuted the charge that the authoritative army of the country is opposed to the settlement of the issue.

Musharraf claimed that during  the Agra Summit in 2001, former premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee and he had even reached a concord to draft a joint declaration under which all bilateral issues, including the burning Kashmir problem, could been solved.

“But the Indian leadership changed their mind at the last minute and did not support the joint declaration, saying that the Cabinet had not approved it,” Musharraf said in an interview to ‘Dunya News’ channel.

Terming the accusation of Army being opposed to resolution of Kashmir issue as ‘vicious agenda’, he said that the need for the Army would remain even if the problem is resolved.

Musharraf said he held talks with all stakeholders in the Kashmir issue, including the Hurriyat Conference and the leadership of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, for the resolution of the issue “but no one could guide me in the right direction.”
